A nursery in Reading has turned a 'requires improvement' rating into a 'good' in the space of a year.

Busy Bees Reading Holme Park nursery was given a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating on February 21.

Its last inspection, on April 13, 2023, said the nursery "does not support SEND students".

At the time, the nursery shared how it was "disappointed" at the report, which gave it a 'requires improvement' rating.

Now a year on, Ofsted's latest report states: "Children who have identified special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) receive effective support to fully access the curriculum.

"The coordinator for children with SEND demonstrates exceptional passion for inclusion and supports all staff to ensure that children with SEND are provided with tailored interventions to promote their good progress."

Ofsted inspectors also said: "Children feel safe and secure, and are happy in this inclusive setting.

"They are well cared for by their key persons, who know them and their families really well."

"Targeted support" is given to parents and toddlers to aid in development.

The report goes on to talk about how a familiar routine is followed, with children being taught basic hygiene and self-care skills.

"Staff engage children in meaningful conversations that deepen children's understanding of other beliefs, including those with dietary requirements that link to these," Ofsted continued.

"Children learn to respect others' choices and observe their personal preferences."

Those at the nursery "behave well and demonstrate high levels of engagement".

There was high praise for the leadership team who display a "can-do attitude" and "have worked hard to design and embed a clear and appropriately sequenced curriculum that builds on children’s unique starting points".

However, the nursery has been told it must work to "develop consistency of teaching to support children at all times in their learning, particularly where additional strategies have been implemented to further support children's communication and language".

Busy Bees Reading Holme Park's Centre Director, Charlotte Way, was praised in the report for being a "supportive leader" who "understands the importance of staff wellbeing".

Charlotte said: “We are delighted to receive a ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted – this wouldn’t have been possible without our dedicated team who have gone above and beyond for our children.

“Following our inspection last year, the team has worked so hard to turn things around by fostering a positive workplace culture, sharing best practices and increased training. We are looking forward to growing even further and working with our parents to ensure every child receives the best start in life.”
