IT WAS a party in Pangbourne with a special celebrity guest invited for a very important occasion for the village.

Streamed live on Channel 4 last night (April 12) was the grand opening of Pangbourne’s public toilets after years of fundraising and campaigning for villagers.

There were bubbles in hands, a dj set up, and fun in the air as Big Brother winner David Potts joined villagers for the momentous occasion.

Villagers, who have been working tirelessly for years to reopen the conveniences after closing in 2017, called upon TV star Joe Lycett for help in cutting the ribbon to open the loos.

However, unable to make it due to the live filming of the comedian’s Late Night Lycett in Birmingham he called upon Big Brother’s David to give him a help in hand during the show.

The tv celeb, also known for his leading role in reality show Ibiza weekender, was called in to support live on Channel 4 the officially opening.

Crowds turned up in force in Pangbourne Village Hall car park to mark them milestone moment, as David cut the ribbon and made a ‘spontaneous’ speech.

Speaking exclusively to the Reading Chronicle, who was invited along for the fun, David said: “When I won Celebrity Big Brother I definitely didn't think I'd be opening a gents toilet.

"It was a very good experience. It's a lovely town here innit? I literally found out about this 10 minutes ago."

Campaign group Action for Pangbourne Toilets has been working hard for many years to get to this moment.

The story of Pangbourne's public toilets campaign is one that started almost seven years ago when the unit was closed due to lack of funding for upkeep.

Villagers flung into action and over the past 6 and half years have worked to fundraise to gradually restore, revamp, and reopen the public conveniences bit by bit.

The disabled toilets were first to be reopened a few years back, the women's toilet reopened in 2022, and finally tonight the men's toilets are officially reopening.

Trustee Alyson Ebbrell said "It's just so great to get everything open. We didn't think this night was going to happen. It's so exciting."

The event saw a DJ, free prosecco, a food van for the special occasion and it was a great, friendly atmosphere.

Villagers went all out including lady dressed as toilet roll who said "It's a life dream to be a toilet roll, I'm having the best time."

Another villager who joined the celebrations was Ella Anderson who said "It's amazing shining a light on Pangbourne like this. I'm such a big fan on Joe and David."
