A fire recently tore through an independent shop on 'smelly alley.'

Fire services were called to Union Street Mobiles this Easter Sunday March 31 after a worried member of the public saw large billows of smoke coming out of the building.

A nearby business owner said "I suddenly smelled smoke and just looked outside and there the fire was. I then called the man who owns the shop and then the fire brigade."

"As it was Easter Sunday, hardly any of the shops on Union Street were open. it was really lucky that I was here otherwise the whole of the alley may have gone up in smoke.

"I just can't believe this is the fourth fire in a year. It's just crazy."

The shop owner, who asked not to be named, said that the man who owns Union Street Mobiles is 'devastated' at what has happened to his business.

The neighbouring store's owner Mohamed Aslam said that the fire started due to a lithium battery and that the fire brigade had to force their way into the shop and broke the metal shutters.

The store owner said: "It was so lucky they controlled it in time. the fire services were able to get to us very promptly."
