His breakthrough came after he represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest, where he came second with his song "Space Man."
The Eurovision legend was busking in the town as part of his mission to hit Christmas number one.
He was out there busking amid the Christmas market to promote his new Christmas single "You're Christmas to Me"
Dozens of people watched as Mr Ryder serenaded the crowd, accompanied by a fellow musician on an amplified acoustic guitar.
He addressed the crowd and said: "Those who have just joined us, let me fill you in on what on earth is going on.
"Here in Reading town centre, we find ourselves in an unprecedented chart race and a chart battle for the ages against the almighty mountainous goliath Wham.
"We are currently in second place, which we know all too well trust me."
Mr Ryder then rallied the crowd and sang "Run Run Rudolph" with them, encouraging individuals to join in on the microphone.
Everyone took part in the singing, and many filmed the music star on their phones.
