Businesses in Reading have shared their sadness over the loss of The Grumpy Goat, a popular café and cheese shop which has announced its looming closure.

The Grumpy Goat, located on Union Street, is set to close after its landlord gave it a week's notice to vacate the premises.

It has been a staple on the high street for 10 years, but in an Instagram post on Wednesday, October 25, the team at the Grumpy Goat said: “All good things must come to an end, but sometimes sooner than we would like."

With the news of the closure spreading, The Fox and Hounds Beer House in Caversham has also chimed in to share its "devastation" at the news.

They have since shared an Instagram post by Connie Cain, of Milk Reading - a rum and cocktail bar in the town.

Taking to Instagram, Connie said: "I can't get over how livid the Goat News has made me.

"Anne-Marie and Charlie have worked for a decade to create a beautiful local community in a town not only overrun by national chains but also American fast food chains as well.

"Whenever we talk to people about Reading, one thing that is always mentioned is the lack of independents in this town.

"Phone shops and vape shops have taken over an iconic alley that was once known for local butchers, fish mongers and grocers, and The Grumpy Goat was a beacon of what the area could become if the council did anything about it."

The statement goes on to cite a number of community events hosted by The Grumpy Goat and their "huge" role in the indie scene as well as in the LGBTQA+ community with their Glitter events.

"This is a perfect example of landlord greed that should be stamped out," they added.

"They have been given a week to move everything out of the shop before they lose access.

"These are people. This is their livelihood. They have a team of employees who are now out of jobs.

"It is devastating to lose such an icon of an independent, but also our friends that we work closely with and have collaborated on multiple events."

The Grumpy Goat will be closing its doors on Saturday, October 28.
