A popular café and independent cheese shop has been forced to close its doors after being given a week’s notice by their landlord.

Located on Union Street, the Grumpy Goat has been a staple in Reading Town Centre for the past 10 years.

Serving a variety of dishes, craft beers, and grilled cheese sandwiches, the community and business owners have said that they are ‘lost for words’ at the café's latest curveball.

In an Instagram Post, posted on Wednesday, October 25, the team at the Grumpy Goat said: “All good things must come to an end, but sometimes sooner than we would like.

“It is with our saddest of hearts that we must tell you that the goat’s journey has come to an end. This will be our last week of trading, culminating in a blow-out Halloween/farewell party on Saturday night (28th Oct).

The business has stated that it was the landlord's ‘swift and brutal’ notice that forced them to close, giving them only one week to vacate the property.

This follows the highs and lows that the Grumpy Goat has suffered throughout the last few years, including COVID-19 and the devastating fire on Union Street.

The Grumpy Goat added: “We are eternally grateful for the support and love you have shown us over the last 10 years. You have all been there through the many highs - and the curveball lows - and we will cherish the times we have spent together.

“We feel we have so much more to say, but for now we are in shock and lost for words.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to our little Goat team, our family. We will do everything we can to support them on their onward journey.”

Members of the community have expressed their outrage and sadness at the latest news.
