Speaking to the BBC’S Crimewatch Live programme, Ms Wood said her life will ‘never be the same’.

She said: “I thought I was going to die and never see my kids again. Now I won’t go no where [sic]. I don’t trust no one [sic].

“I’ve been left with nothing. My life is never going to be the same ever.”

On the morning of the incident, Ms Wood’s four children were out of the house and she was about to take a bath before finishing her Christmas shopping.

“It was a really quiet neighbour,” she said. “Everyone looks out for everyone. I’d lived there for 16 years and I’d never locked my door because I didn’t need to….I didn’t have no problems [sic].

“I was in the kitchen and I looked down the hallway and there were two guys stood there. One of them turned and looked right towards me with a bottle in his hands.

“The first thing I did was put the dressing gown over my head and he was tipping all this stuff over me and I couldn’t breathe - it was horrendous.”

Ms Wood was then able to get down the hallway into the living room in attempts to escape through the window. But the offender held her back before punching her and slashing her neck.

“At that point I saw stars,” she said. “We fell into the Christmas tree and then I managed to dive out the front room window.”

She suffered from a broken jaw in two places and an injury to her neck. She was taken to hospital for treatment.
