‘Shoddy’ roadworks have angered neighbours that have called out a company over its broadband installations as potholes reportedly appear in Caversham.

The internet company CityFibre is currently undertaking work to install fibreoptic cables underground to improve internet speeds in Reading with its contractors Instalcom.

But not all of the work has gone smoothly reportedly resulting in potholes emerging in roads, which has been documented by cyclist and mum Hilary Jane Smart.

Hilary said: “Two big potholes opened up on my school run within days of each other, one on Gosbrook Road by Waitrose, and one on Briants Avenue near Gosbrook Road.

“Shoddy work by Instalcom, hope it will be fixed soon and there aren’t more to come.”

A spokesperson for CityFibre said such rips can occur during installation work but they are usually dealt with swiftly after they arise.

Hilary acknowledged that one of the potholes was filled the day after she higlighted the issue on Twitter.

CityFibre regional partnership director Stacey King said: “CityFibre is investing £58m into Reading to transform its digital infrastructure and bring full fibre connectivity to almost every home and business in the city.

“This is a major undertaking, which is why we always work closely with our contractor and the local council to ensure all reinstatement works are completed as quickly as possible, meeting the high standards expected.

“We can confirm that this is the case for reinstatement works which were recently completed in Gosbrook Road and Briants Avenue in Caversham.

“We’d like to thank Reading residents for their patience and support and ask that they continue to bear with us we deliver this major investment programme.”
