A road that is being made for new homes in Caversham has been named in honour of a demolished pub.

The Gardeners Arms used to stand in Surley Row, Emmer Green, up until late 2020, when it was demolished to make way for seven new homes.

A small new road is being made to serve the houses, and councillors have decided on what it will be called.

At a planning committee meeting on November 2, councillors agreed the road will be called ‘The Gardeners’ in honour of the demolished pub.

Councillor Jo Lovelock (Labour, Norcot), chair of the committee, said: “That’s what everybody knew the pub as, you met at ‘The Gardeners’.

“I know a number of us have fond memories of socialising there, I’m sure local people in Emmer Green and Surley Row area also remember it fondly, so I think that’s the appropriate name.”

An alternative name, ‘Fred Pugh’ was proposed by Conservative councillors Paul Carnell and Isobel Ballsdon, to honour the memory of former cllr Fred Pugh, who served on the council for many years.

However, ‘The Gardeners’ name, which was suggested by Greene King, was approved unanimously in a vote.

The development is currently under construction.

Initially, the plan was to replace the pub with eight new homes, however that number was revised down to seven, with the development consisting of four semi-detached and three detached houses.

The plan, application reference 190040, was approved in September 2020.
