QUESTIONS have been raised about club flyers posted around the town seemingly encouraging people to shun Dry January.

The posters, spotted on Forbury Road, Broad Street, Minster Street and other places, have been added by The Cocktail Club, which recently opened on Gun Street.

Their contents appear to suggest residents should not participate in Dry January, a one-month challenge where people give up alcohol.

Reading Chronicle:

All the posters feature the tagline #f*ckdryjan, and one flyer seems to encourage people to ‘drink one cocktail’.

But the flyers have left a sour taste in the mouths of some.

One popular local blogger commented: “In a time of great despair and uncertainty for the hospitality industry, I'm sure we all wish the very best to all pubs, bars, restaurants, clubs and hotels.

“That said, I hope the new Cocktail Club that's opened on Gun Street blows up in a freak pornstar martini accident.

“The absolute STATE of this lame 'guerilla-style marketing... This isn't 2007 Shoreditch, lads. Reel your necks in.”

A post on The Cocktail Club’s parent page, the London Cocktail Club on Instagram, explained the campaign.

It read: “We are here to CELEBRATE these hangovers. Are we right, or are we RIGHT. Here at TCC we are on a MISSION to ABORT Dry Jan, so let me hear you say it... F*£K DRY JAN!!!”

A handful of commenters appeared to disagree with the campaign’s message, however.

One said: “This is f***ing foul.”

Another added: “Yikes…. This is problematic in so many different ways 😮😮Amazingly bad angle to take, just wow. Worst campaign ever guys.”

A third said: “What a complete load of tosh.”

A fourth commented: “Dry January all the way.”

The Cocktail Club has been contacted for comment.
