Crowds gathered in Broad Street concerned for the welfare of a man lying on the edge of the roof of Metro Bank on Friday.

Police cordoned off the bank in St Mary’s Butts and the adjacent Taco Bell at around 1pm.

A negotiator was then brought in, according to a representative of Broad Street Mall, and sometime after 6pm the man was brought down safely from the roof.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police confirmed it was a fear for welfare incident with no wider danger to the public.

A 27-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident before being released without charge.

At least four police officers and one security guard could be seen on the ground during the incident, and at least one officer could be seen on the roof.

Police warned passers-by to stop shouting at the man on the roof and asked them to think twice before filming or photographing the man.

Employees of Metro Bank continued to work inside but customers were not let in by police.

Broad Street Mall remained open throughout.
