THE Reading Chronicle has launched its Dog of the Month feature with the help from Dogs Trust Newbury.

Each month, we will appeal to dog lovers who are considering adopting a dog and giving it the forever home it’s been eagerly waiting for.

This month’s Dog of the Month is Sapphire, or Saffy for short who is an affectionate 10-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier who loves nothing more than to be at home cuddling all day.

Antony Dominy, Dogs Trust Newbury rehoming centre manager, said: “Saffy really is a ‘people’ dog! She’s very affectionate and loves the company of humans. She would love nothing more to be at home with you all day, especially if you can offer a large, comfy bed and some long-lasting chews to keep her occupied.

"She’s not keen on other dogs though so will need to be the only pet in her new home with no neighbouring dogs and walked in areas that are quiet where she won't have to come into contact with many other dogs. Her new adopters will need to be prepared to help her with her reaction to other dogs and continue with the work we have put into her muzzle training. We use treats and positive training methods to build a positive association with her muzzle she sees it as no different to wearing a harness.

“Saffy is also working very hard on a weightloss programme so her new owners will need to be committed to her diet so she can reach a healthy weight."
