BUILDINGS across Tilehurst will be lit up in blue tomorrow to thank key workers.

Shops, churches, halls and even the Water Tower will be lit up in blue as part of the event Turn Tilehurst Blue.

Organiser Kate Taylor explained the event is to mark the anniversary of the first lockdown and thank the NHS and all key workers.

It is also a chance to reflect on the loved ones we have lost during the pandemic.

She said: "People haven’t been able to grieve like they normally would."

She explained the event will give "people the opportunity to mark the lives of a loved one in their local village".

There will be a memorial tree placed at the Tilehurst Memorial within the Triangle which will be lit up in blue.

There will be messages on the tree that people have written to their loved ones.

Poems people have written about lockdown will be placed at the memorial in frames.

A bench will also be presented to key workers by the mayor.

For one night only, the Water Tower will be lit up in blue too.

Tilehurst Water tower was built in 1932.

It is 40 meters high and the internal staircase has 169 steps.

It supplies water to around 12,000 homes and businesses in Tilehurst and the wider Reading area.

Speaking about the event, Kate said: "I would just like to thank all the key workers personally and to the residents of Tilehurst for showing their support.

"These events wouldn’t happen without their effort and their hard work."
