TRAFFIC monitoring checks have taken place across roads in Reading to prevent vehicles from breaching weight restrictions.

Roads have weight restrictions to prevent damage to roads and to prevent the risk to drivers.

In February 2021, Public Protection Partnership officers found 20 traffic weight restriction breaches across Reading, Wokingham and West Berkshire.

The PPP, who enforce weight restriction orders under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, said: "Overweight vehicles not only cause damage to roads (requiring tax payers money to fix) but also having an over weight vehicle affects a driver's efficiency to break and steer, therefore putting themselves and other road users at risk."

Under the 33 monitoring instances, 10 roads across Reading, Wokingham and West Berks saw drivers breach weight restrictions because their vehicle was too large/heavy.

The roads are:

  • Ermin Street
  • Brimpton Road
  • High Street, Streatly
  • Wallingford Road
  • Skew Bridge
  • Kirtons Farms Road
  • Langley Hill
  • Mill Lane
  • Crookham Common Road

During the checks, potentially overloaded goods vehicles are identified, stopped and directed to a weighbridge.

The driver of the vehicle as well as the business are liable for these offences.

If your vehicle is seen breaching a weight restriction or it is found to be overloaded you may be prosecuted.
