A CARE home resident who lives in Wokingham celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday.

Gladys Beatrice Georgina Butler lives at Lovat House Care Home in Wokingham and turned 100 years-old on Wednesday, February 24.

The former nursery worker celebrated her special day in lockdown with a champagne lunch and cake.

Fiona Honeyman, care home manager, said: “Gladys had a lovely day and was so happy to receive her card from the queen.

"We took a video of her opening her card for all her family to see. She had a FaceTime with her granddaughter from America and visits from other family members (behind a screen).

"She enjoyed a party lunch with champagne and cake. It was an amazing happy day with lots of laughter. Gladys had been a part of the Lovat House family for 8 years now.”

Reading Chronicle:

Gladys was born on 24th February 1921 and was one of five girls.

She has lived in Wokingham most of her life and went to Palmer School in Wokingham.

After leaving school she went to work at various local nurseries where she met her husband Ron, their first date was at the cinema and from then on they were together for 73 years.

On July 12, 1941, the pair wedded at Hurst Church and went to live in Grovelands Avenue, Winnersh.

They had their first child, a daughter called June in June 1942, followed by a son called Tony in May 1944.

After the war they moved to Peach Street, then Wescott Road and then finally in 1962 to Langborough Road where they lived until 2013 when Ron sadly passed away at the age of 92.

They both shared a passion for gardening and their garden was always immaculate.

Gladys also did voluntary work at the Cancer Research shop in Wokingham for 20 years.

After Ron died, she left Langborough Road where she’d lived for 51 years and moved just round the corner into Lovat House - she has been living there for the last 8 years.

Sadly she has outlived both her children, but she has 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
