How do you feel about making your debut on the UK and European festival circuit?

We have been to Europe and the UK a few times this year — it’s been a series of wonderful surprises. It’s amazing to go to a country you have never visited before and meet people that know your music and share the connection to something that you created half-way around the world. The audiences have been so supportive everywhere we’ve been. It’s clear how much music and the arts are appreciated and treated with respect in other countries.

What have you heard about Reading Festival from fellow artists?

We’ve heard nothing but amazing stories from bands that have performed there. UK festivals have a great reputation for being huge, fun and wild. Hopefully this year’s will be the same. Oh, I heard they had robot dinosaurs that can fly and their insides are actually giant cotton candy machines and they shoot cotton candy over the crowds and everyone eats it off each other. No?

How does it feel to be compared to the likes of Arcade Fire and Haim?

We have the utmost respect for those bands. They make beautiful records, write great songs and put on incredible shows. So that is very flattering. However, I think when a band has a lot of people on stage playing anthemic music they get compared to Arcade Fire. Similarly, when you have a band of talented women rocking out there is a comparison to Haim. I think if you really compare us we would be a mix of The B-52’s, the Carter Family and Slipknot.

What can fans expect from your set on the Festival Republic Stage?

We try our hardest to leave a lasting impression on each audience. We really want people to feel that they witnessed something special and that they will walk away from the show feeling something for days afterward. We love to play loud. We love to play soft. We love to hit drums. We love to sing harmonies and we love to leave the stage as sweaty as possible.

When did it all start and how did you meet?

The girls met in Boston and started singing and writing together pretty quickly. Their friendship was formed around their musical connection. It’s quite a unique friendship. We all met in Brooklyn a few years later. Now the band has been on the road for almost two years straight.

What was it like making your first UK TV appearance on Later with Jools Holland?

Pretty intimidating and surreal. It’s a beautiful studio, you are surrounded by the audience and the bands all sit with them while the fellow guests perform on the show. Each band gets a full day to hang out and meet the other performers and Jools is an incredible host. It’s a really special and unique experience.

What inspires you to make music?

Driving across the country and staring out the window at the landscape. The passing of time. The passing of friends. Luke Temple. The movie “American Movie.” Meeting new people that share how our music has affected their lives. Falling in love. Falling out of love. The anxious feeling inside that only sometimes stops after you’ve finished writing or recording a song, the magic that happens on stage between us, even after playing the same songs night after night.

Are there any bands you aspire to be like?

I think a big realisation this year came after opening bigger tours. We now aspire to be the type of band that can put together a team of people on the road and make sure that everyone feels comfortable, respected and ready to work hard night after night. We really felt that from day one when we were opening for Tegan and Sarah. They have created an environment that everyone on the tour feels so happy to be a part of –– and on top of that they are so grateful and interactive with their fans. We hope that some day we can be a band that is able to make our tours feel like a party every night for everyone there. As for now we all cram into our van night after night and just try our hardest to put on a good show and try to wash our clothes at least once every two weeks.

Are you hoping to release another album soon or are you working on any new material?

Does the Pope pee in the woods if he is camping? HELL YES! New music coming soon!

What can we see next from Lucius?

The guys are getting wigs and the girls are getting fake beards. We’re just gonna try it out –– it might be a disaster. Also we are going to tour next year playing only Metallica covers at our shows. Again, could be a total disaster.
