READING Cricket Club have been offered the chance to play in Germany in October.

An invitation has come from Dusseldorf, who have been officially twinned with Reading for more than 50 years although there has been a ‘special relationship’ between the towns for closer to 70 years.

The German side will be chosen from members of the British Business Club Dusseldorf and the congregation of the local Anglican church.

They don’t rate themselves too highly, as they have rather cheekily asked Reading CC not to send over all of their best players.

The club are prepared to travel providing enough members are willing to commit.

  • READING CC earned a name check during the Women’s World Cricket Cup this week.

It came about when Heather Knight, who captained Berkshire last season, and Natalie Sciver shared a stand of 213 as England scorched to 377-7 in 50 overs against Pakistan.

It was England’s joint highest third-wicket partnership in a one-day women’s international, matching the performance of Carole Hodges and Helen Plimmer against Ireland at Sonning Lane on July 24, 1993. On that occasion, England won easily in a rain-affected game and that is what also happened at Leicester on Tuesday.

  • FOLLOWING the arrival of former England coach Jason Lee, Reading Hockey Club are looking to bring in more Level One and Two coaches.

Lee will take charge of the men’s section and the new roles will be primarily for their ladies’ sections, spread across teams from national league down to local divisions.

Reading are looking to revive the fortunes of their ladies section, who saw the first team relegated from the Investec League Premier Division last season.

There is an abundance of young talent at the club, but they need more guidance.

  • THE increasingly-popular walking football for those aged 50 plus has now come to Woodley with sessions being held on the 3G pitch at Woodford Park each Wednesday from 2.30pm.
