READING goalkeeper Tommy Alexander believes England Hockey should postpone league fixtures when international tournaments are taking place.

He is one of four players who will be missing Blues’ next two matches.

Alexander and Tim Atkins are in Scotland’s squad for the World League 2 in Belfast which starts this weekend, while James Carson and Jonny Gooch will both be with Wales.

Fortunately, Reading are not involved in play-off or relegation issues, and so the results of their matches won’t affect their own league place.

But this Sunday’s opponents, Hampstead & Westmninster, are challenging for the play-offs and no doubt they will be delighted to be facing a depleted Blues side.

Last Sunday Reading were missing skipper Tom Carson, as he was away with England in South Africa, and the forward may well have taken one of the chances that came their way in a 2-1 defeat at Wimbledon.

The England trip and World League have come at the most important stage of the league season, and Alexander argues: “There should be a break when internationals are taking place. There is plenty of time to re-arrange matches before the start of the play-offs.”

  • THERE is nothing better than playing in a cup final, so plenty of local players must be getting excited.

First in line are Caversham AFC Swans who play Milton United in the Berks & Bucks Girls under-18 final at Thatcham Town on Saturday, April 1.

A day later, Highmoor Ibis U15 boys will be looking to lift the B&B Minor Cup when they take on Penn & Tylers Green at Marlow.

The following Wednesday evening sees the Women’s Junior Cup final between Tilehurst Panthers and Taplow United at Ascot United.

Panthers have a chance of completing a double as their Stripes team play Moretonville Juniors in the Girls U14 Cup final at Chesham United on Sunday, April 29.

On the same day at Chesham, there is also another final for Caversham Swans, this time at U16 level against City Belles.

Eldon Celtic Lions have to wait until Sunday, May 7 for their big day, when they meet Tattenhoe at Flackwell Heath.
