THE mystery of a floral tribute in Reading FC colours left on a seaside bench in Barton-on-Sea has been solved.

Former Chronicle sports editor, Roger Ware, spotted the striking tribute – bearing the name ‘Bob’ and the number eight – while walking his dog near the coastal village.

And with the help of the Chronicle and the public, we can reveal it was left in honour of ex-Reading player, Ray Millard.

Millard, who was also known as ‘Bob’ to his friends, made two first-team appearances in the 1949/50 season.

But he made a much bigger mark on local sport in the area.

Born in South Shields, the former shipbuilder joined Middlesbrough, then Blyth Spartans before ex-Reading boss Ted Drake signed him for £100.

During his time in Reading, he founded Mapledurham FC youth team where one of his early recruits was Royals legend Lawrie Sanchez.

After leaving Elm Park, Millard went on to win Division Three South with Walsall before retiring to the south coast where he recently died, aged 88.

Barton resident, Tracey Hart, explained: “My father in law Michael Miller use to speak to him about Reading FC.

“Michael use to photograph the games at Elm Park for The Chronicle at one time.

“I met ‘Bob’ once and he told me he played at Elm Park."

Ware added: “I’m really pleased we managed to solve the mystery.

“Who said that in this social media age, newspapers were no longer relevant?”
