Adam Federici, Jem Karacan and Alex Pearce – as well as one other unnamed senior player - will be given the chance to put pen to paper on a new deal that would keep them at the Madejski Stadium.

However, due to the club's current financial restrictions, it is believed that the terms of these contracts will be a lot lower than the money these players are currently on and it remains to be seen whether they'll accept the reduced terms.

Clarke remains hopeful though, and said it will be up to his players to decide once the contract is offered.

“They'll be offered contracts and after that they hold all the cards,” he explained. “There are some players out of contract, the majority will be offered a new one but we have to wait and see whether they'll accept the contract offered.

“That's the situation we're in at the moment.” A summer of upheaval is expected at the Madejski Stadium as Clarke looks to make his mark on the team but the Reading boss remains tight-lipped on just how much change will take place.

“It's always difficult to gauge how much work will be done in the summer,” he said. “You have to see how things pan out over the course of it.

“We've got a lot of good players under contract here next season. We'll get them back in a good shape and we'll look to add some quality players to the squad that'll add something.

“We've got the opportunity in the summer to rebuild and start building a squad that can challenge to get back into the Premier League which is what everyone wants, including the owners, which is why I think they'll back me 100%.

“I know what I need to do in the summer, I know where I need to go and I'm prepared.

“If you told me that I could only bring in two players this summer then it'd be two strikers, that's where we are at the moment.”
