Royals climbed up to fourth in the Championship on Tuesday evening with a 1-0 victory over struggling Charlton.

The only goal of the game was scored in the 13th minute by Billy Sharp, his first for the club on his full debut.

At the time it looked as though Royals would go on to win comfortably, but instead they were left hanging on at the end as the Addicks dominated much of the second half.

Groans of frustrations could be heard around the Madejski as the hosts appeared unable to retain possession.

There were even boos from some supporters when Royals opted to pass the ball back to goalkeeper Alex McCarthy rather than go forward.

But Cummings, making just his second league start of the season at left-back, says the most important thing was the result and the reaction at the final whistle.

“The fans want to be entertained, that’s what they pay their money for, but we are on the pitch to do a job, that’s our main focus,” he said.

“They will be happy we came away with a win and a clean sheet so I don’t think you will hear them saying anything at the end.

“We go into the game with a gameplan and we know what we have to do to win, we showed that tonight, and that’s the main focus.”

Cummings was one of three changes to the Reading side that won at Nottingham Forest along with Sharp and Jobi McAnuff.

The 24-year-old has struggled for minutes this season as Chris Gunter, Wayne Bridge and Stephen Kelly have been preferred in the full-back positions.

He is likely to drop to the bench again this Saturday against Bournemouth (3pm ko) as Gunter returns from suspension.

But the Jamaican international is not too downbeat about the situation and is determined to make his mark when given an opportunity.

“Everyone wants to play, when you get the opportunity you have to show why you should be in the team and take the chance,” he commented.

“I am contracted to 2015 and in that time my priorities are with Reading and if something else happens along the way, we will have to see, but I am contracted to Reading.

“When the time comes then I will look to take my opportunity and do my best for the team.”

Royals will still be without six senior players for the visit of Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth on Saturday.

Wayne Bridge, Jason Roberts, Mikele Leigertwood, Jem Karacan and Sean Morrison are all out until the new year with injuries while Chris Baird is not likely to return until later in the month.

There was positive news on Tuesday, though, as Royston Drenthe was back on the bench after a spell on the sidelines.

And Cummings said: “We have a good squad and if someone needs to fill in they can do that quite comfortably.

“That’s the main thing, if you have a good squad then when someone comes in they will perform to their best and do well.

“We have got a good squad rotation and hopefully we can use that until the end of the season and get that top-two spot.”
