READING YMCA Rapids rounded off another sensational season for the club by beating Braybrooke 4-0 in the Berkshire Trophy Centre Intermediate Cup final, writes Richard Ashton.

Andrej Homola put the Young Men ahead after 15 minutes, with Simon Maraj-Bennett extending the lead midway through the first half.

Any hopes of a Braybrooke fightback were snuffed out with a Rhys Wood brace around the hour mark, and Rapids held on for a comfortable victory.

Premier Division champions Reading YMCA had their final game conceded by Woodley United Royals, meaning they completed a second consecutive unbeaten season.

The Young Men also won the BTC Senior Cup and the Maidenhead Norfolkians Senior Cup in a magnificent treble-winning campaign.

It is believed Karl Curtis’ side are currently undergoing the longest unbeaten streak in English league football, having last lost against Marlow United in March 2016 – a staggering 59 games ago.

Their run has included 54 wins and five draws.

Chairman Mark Lemm said: “To go 59 games unbeaten is an incredible achievement and is a reflection of not only the talent of the manager and the squad, but also a mentality that refuses to lose.

“Karl epitomises this and is always driving the players forwards – even if we are 6-0 up in a game he does not accept players relaxing or getting complacent.

“Then you have a player like Ryan Adams who does not stop running for 90 minutes of every game and has been scoring goals in this league for 10 years. It’s all about the group though, and this attitude runs through the team to ensure standards are kept high.”

He continued: “Karl has managed the team for three years now and won six trophies in that time, including three consecutive titles and we are established as the top club in Reading at our level.

“We don’t have a sponsor or a clubhouse to generate income and our players have to pay to play, while some clubs in our league are able to pay players. This makes it more special for us as we have had to battle against the odds.

“Unfortunately, we cannot go up to a higher league as the FA requires us to have floodlights and a 50-seater stand which just isn’t possible at our ground in Padworth.

“So our motivation will be to work hard to continue our success and keep improving on and off the pitch.”

In the Reading Diamond Cup final, Taplow United A ended a successful season which saw them secure promotion from Division Four with a 2-0 success against Woodley United B.
