WOODLEY United kept their Division One promotion hopes alive with a 2-1 victory at Sandhurst Town in their Berkshire derby on Saturday.

Maurice Black had three chances for the Fizzers in the early stages, while Woodley’s first opportunity fell to Danny Horscroft after 17 minutes as he missed from 20 yards.

United then started to take over and Liam Wilson pounced on a poor touch by a Town defender to drive towards goal but could only prod wide.

Just after the half-hour mark, Jake Nicholls forced Sandhurst keeper Matt Watson to beat out a powerful effort, and an uneventful half ended with United’s Matt Jones having a goal chalked off for offside.

However, the visitors did take the lead seven minutes after the restart and dominated from then on.

Full back Danny Greenwood clipped a ball down the line to Liam Wilson who picked out Jones in the box, and he took a touch before netting his first for the club.

The home side’s task to get back into the game was made considerably harder on 61 minutes when captain Tom Cooper was shown a straight red card after a late tackle on Nicholls.

Yet the Fizzers rallied and equalised during their best spell of the match when Sean Delfosse turned in at the near post after Henry Lee saw a shot from distance deflect behind for a corner.

However, Woodley retook the lead with nine minutes to go when a Jones pass found substitute Carl Prestidge in space in the box, and a well-placed left-footed shot from 12 yards beat Matt Watson and found the right corner.

United had another goal ruled out in the final stages when Charlie Oakley was deemed offside, but the hosts were unable to snatch a second equaliser.

A 62nd-minute Danny Horscroft equaliser gave Woodley United a 1-1 draw at Bicester Town last night.

They host Chalfont Wasps on Saturday (3pm).

  • AFC Aldermaston suffered a disappointing 4-2 defeat at lowly Didcot Town Reserves.

Stuart McCarthy put the Railwaymen in front on 19 minutes, and he then doubled the lead before the prolific Kai Parton-Edey cut the gap to 2-1 at the break.

McCarthy completed his hat-trick in the second half, and with Tom Stone also on target for the hosts, Dan Alliston’s goal for the Atom Men was merely a consolation.

AFC Aldermaston do not have a game this weekend, returning to action at home to Rayners Lane on Saturday, March 11.
