AFC Aldermaston completed a league double over Wokingham & Emmbrook in Hellenic Division One East after a 2-0 victory on Saturday.

Sumas were unlucky not to score in a bright opening spell when they hit the Aldermaston woodwork on three occasions.

The hosts were also cursing their luck a minute before the break when Lee Wheeler’s penalty was saved by Sean Woodward after Martin King had been tripped in the box.

The two sides went into the break locked at 0-0 and, with neither side looking like they could take advantage, it was set for someone to take the contest by the scruff of the neck.

The Atoms broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half when a Karl Hanks tantalising run and cross was headed home by recent signing, Joe Cummuskey.

The goal appeared to settle Aldermaston and they looked a different team with Hanks involved in the second goal just four minutes later. He worked his way into the Sumas area and found Dan Alliston, whose cross was converted by top scorer Kai Parton-Edey.

The visitors struggled to find a way back into the match, with Daniel Smith having to beat out a volley that was on target, and Aldermaston held on to climb to fourth in the table.

Their next fixture is a trip to a pointless Wantage Town Reserves on Boxing Day (2pm).

Meanwhile, Wokingham, whose manager will hope for better luck having kicked the warm-up cones across the dugout in frustration, drop down to 11th place ahead of a Boxing Day trip to Finchampstead (2pm).

Highmoor Ibis

HIGHMOOR Ibis lost 3-0 at league leaders Thame United in the Hellenic Premier on Saturday.

All three goals came late in the game, with Highmoor finishing with nine men following a straight red card for Tristan Campbell and another for Jamie Connor for picking up two yellow cards against his former club.

Ibis travel to Flackwell Heath on Boxing Day (3pm).
