The difference in the scores represented the difference in leagues, speed, finishing and defence with Rockets shooting stats their best so far this early season.

American import Alex Zurn hit four from five trebles, while 15- year-old Cameron Bett hit two three-pointers out of the three he attempted. Matt Davis also hit four trebles in his 18 point haul.

The game began with neither team scoring in the opening two minutes as both defences cancelled out their opponents attacking threat.

Rockets’ captain Danny Carter and Alex Zurn both had blocks, Adria Baiget hustled for possession and then Rockets broke through with style and finesse as Emanuel Campi hit the first treble, Zurn made the first slam dunk, Baiget hit a treble and Guillermo Sanchez opened his account finishing a quality Rockets team move.

And the double digit lead soon grew to 19 by the end of the first quarter with a score of 28-9.

Head Coach Manuel Pena Garces has been quick to ensure all his players get much court time - whatever their previous experience of top level of basketball - so Bett and 18-year-old Bradley Bennett had 35 minutes between them, scoring eight points and pulling down 12 rebounds between them, which was a great contribution from the youngsters.

Zurn began the second period in a hurry as he hit a pair of consecutive trebles - the first one on the buzzer and the second from wide out - and two from two from the free throw line.

When Davis hit a pair of trebles, the Rockets lead was 40-13 and the game was all but finished.

A jump shot and classy bounce pass from Sergi Guardia to Campi brought up the 50 points before the arena responded with applause for 15-year-old Bett hitting Rockets’ last score before the interval, which they went into with a 57-22 lead.

The third period saw Swindon play some good basketball at both ends of the court resulting in just a tight 18-15 advantage for Rockets., while Zurn took a bang on his leg and was rested - but only after he’d entertained the appreciative crowd with another slam dunk and treble.

Baiget was orchestrating the offences with exquisite passes, blind, overhead and always penetrative as Rockets went into the final stanza 75-37 up.

Four more trebles from different players showed the space Rockets were creating for the open shot as Davis, Campi, Guardia and a buzzer beater from Bett took the game way beyond the plucky Swindon team, who sometimes appeared in shock as they were limited to just five points in the fourth quarter as Rockets amassed 20 - finishing the game with a 95-42 victory.

The top scorers for Rockets were Zurn with 25 points, Davis with 18, and Guillermo Sanchez with 14.

For Swindon, Antonio Wilburn picked up 13 points and Matt Ford scored 12 points.

The performance offered much encouragement to head coach Pena Garces before Rockets National Trophy clash with the Newham Neptunes on Saturday (6.30 pm).

Rockets beat the London-based side in last season’s final but Pena Garces warned: “Last season we had some great games against them. They beat us twice in the league and were the only team that achieved this but it was good for us that we beat them in the Trophy final and the play off quarter final.

“However we are expecting another difficult challenge because they can be really good on any given day.”

He added that he was pleased with the performance against Swindon and also to come out of the clash with no new injury concerns ahead of Saturday’s clash against the physical Neptunes.

He added: “We are still building our team and our way of playing together and these games can only do us good and help us learn and reflect whether we win or lose.”

The game with Newham will be preceded by the launch of a wheelchair initiative in collaboration with disability sport leaders SportsAble, and anyone can try out the sport between 2pm and 4pm before watching the match from 4pm-5.30pm.

Rockets chairman Gary Johnson said: “We are absolutely thrilled at this new venture and hope to see families and friends pop in and try the sport on Saturday.”
