GELASIUS Taaru wants to take Reading fight fans on an exciting journey to the top.

The 24-year-old featherweight from Calcot takes the next step in his exciting professional boxing career at the York Hall in Bethnal Green next month.

For the first time, Taaru is matched over six rounds on Saturday, July 14 – and he hopes his supporters will turn out in force for what promises to be his toughest test yet.

“I’m hoping as many people as possible can come along to cheer me on,” said Taaru. “I want Reading to get behind me.

“The support means a lot – and can help my career. I’ve got time for everyone who buys a ticket off me – and I want to give value for money. I think of myself as an entertainer.”

Taaru has won all five fights – and says his supporters could see him challenge for Southern Area honours by the end of the year.

“I’ve spoken to (manager) Mickey (Helliet),” he said, “and he says he wants me to have a few six rounders and then step up.”

Taaru is convinced he can win the Southern Area belt, stating: “I’m strong and I think featherweights will be surprised by how hard I hit. I can punch and go toe-to-toe, but I can get on the back foot and box as well.

“I showed that in my last fight (a four-round points win over Edwin Tellez in April). I went out there and enjoyed myself and I think the people who paid to watch me had fun as well.”
