THE mini heatwave with us at present causes problems when the bright sun shines down on shallow clear water, writes Alan Hughes.

The Kennet suffers at these times as the fish seek cover, although the deeper water like the Thames can cope much better and this week’s results show this.

Tilehurst Royal British Legion were the only Reading & District Angling Association affiliated club on the Kennet at Beat 5 (Berkeley Ave road bridge).

Tony Tibble took advantage of a good draw (on the Holybook’s entrance into the Kennet) to net three chub plus some silvers to take top spot with 11lbs 14ozs. Andy Chapman claimed the runner-up spot with two chub for 8lbs 9ozs. Completing the trio with 3lbs of silvers was Simon Couling.

Bracknell Avocets held their match on Longwater Lake.

Stewart Howe took first place with 6lbs 14ozs of mainly silver fish.

Second place was claimed by Paul Holland with similar species weighing 6lbs 12ozs. Third spot went to Robin Reynolds with 5lbs 11ozs.

Prestcold A.C. used the Wallingford A stretch of the Thames for their match and Graham Hawkins took the honours with 7lbs 9ozs of silvers. Similar species saw the second place shared between Geoff Eley and Graham Walker with 2lbs 9ozs each of silvers.

Away from RDAA, Reading Fishing Club used their stretch of the Thames at Beale Trust for their match where 18 anglers contested the P.J. Jennings Cup. Malcolm Vigor claimed victory with 14lbs 4ozs consisting of mainly skimmers.

The runner-up spot went to Adam Durnford with a mixed bag totalling 12lbs. Third place went to Dave Chandler with 10lbs 12ozs, again a mixed bag.

The previous weekend there was only one match on the Kennet as Reading Civil Service used the Beat 4A stretch.

Hawkins took the honours with 6lbs 7ozs which included silver fish and one chub of 3lbs 10ozs, while second spot went to Ian Marchant with 12ozs of silvers.

Courage/SE saw their match on the Thames at Sonning won by John Jackson with only 10ozs of small silvers. Ian Claridge and Tony Claridge shared second spot with 6ozs each.

Tring Anglers fished Longwater Lake and the winner was Andy Allday who fished the long pole at 13metres to land bream and bream/roach hybrids to 5lbs. He totalled 54lbs 4ozs.

Darren Wybrow took the runner up place with similar species to the winner to weigh in 34lbs 7ozs using leger techniques.

Martin Rodwell completed the top three with 5lbs 9ozs of mixed species caught on the feeder.

Newtown and Bracknell Avocets joined forces to fish their match at Brown Lee Pool and taking the honours was Robin Reynolds.

He banked mainly carp for 28lbs 1oz. He also picked up the golden peg of £99.

Second place went to Bracknell Avocets member Richard Herman with 6lbs 10ozs and in third place was Derek Carter with 6lbs 9ozs.

Reading Fishing Club used their stretch of the Thames at Child Beale and Richard Rosinski led the way with mainly an all roach net which took the scales down to 11lbs 6ozs.

Second place went to Dave Bosher with a mixed bag of roach and skimmers to weigh in 7lbs. Lionel Cook took third spot with 5lbs 6ozs The RDAA Tuesday Club followed Tring on to Longwater Lake but did not find the fish feeding so well.

John Ambrose took the honours with 13lbs 2ozs which consisted of one tench plus silvers.

Steve Lewis took the runner-up place with 5lbs 8ozs which consisted of one bream.
