BERKSHIRE’S only open-age rugby league club has revealed its name following a public vote.

The team will be called Reading Raiders RLFC which was the most popular choice in an online poll.

But the name is not particularly new as that is what the original Reading league team were known as when they were in their pomp more than two decades ago.

Now the newly-formed Raiders team will resurrect the name as they continue to build for the future.

Raiders chairman Andrew Belt explained: “It’s great to finally be able to finalise our name and this will allow us to create a new badge, build the Reading Raiders brand and register with the Rugby Football League.

“It’s been huge fun conducting a public vote. From the off, Raiders soared into an unassailable lead so hopefully the name will resonate with Reading’s sporting public.

“We felt as a committee that it would be good PR for the club and so it has proved with the story resulting in being interviewed by BBC Radio Berkshire, along with support from the Reading Chronicle and a good buy-in from the public on our social media channels.”

Belt and his Raiders teammates are planning to hand out leaflets in Reading town centre tomorrow (Friday) to further boost the club’s profile.

They will also unveil their new badge at the Brighton 9s tournament on June 25.
