A SUPERMARKET is renewing its bid for late-night deliveries but neighbours and politicians have vowed to fight the plans.

Carland Close residents oppose Asda's plans for its Lower Earley store, which they claim will disturb their sleep. It follows a similar application in February last year, withdrawn in October over noise concerns. Gloria Triggs from Carland Close, who lives 90 yards away and has campaigned against the superstore's previous attempts, said: "Breaches of the delivery hours aren't enforced properly at the moment, this just makes a mockery of it."

Asda can only deliver from 6am-11pm Mondays to Saturdays and 8am-5pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays, but it wants to deliver at all hours except 2-4am. It also wants restrictions on unloading and loading vehicles scrapped and to build a warehouse extension so all loading and unloading can be done indoors, which it says will lessen the noise by eight decibels.

The Lib Dems are against the late-night deliveries and Hawkedon ward campaigner Anthony Vick said: "Asda's neighbours have told us they are furious. They would have to put up with lorries thundering along their roads and the noise of deliveries being unloaded through the night. The Liberal Democrats are strongly opposed to this and will fight for residents' right to a good night's sleep."

Asda's agent, Planning Potential, said: "The store trades on a 24-hour basis and the current delivery arrangements are not sufficient to allow the store to adequately restock and provide fresh goods which customers expect when shopping at Asda."

It said noise surveys showed any increase "will be of less than marginal significance" but neighbours dispute this.

It says its plans will ease congestion since the supermarket has no plans for extra deliveries, only to spread them throughout the day and night.

Wokingham Borough Council in 2008 served a breach notice on the supermarket for violating its delivery hour restrictions. Comments on the applications (VAR/2010/0475 and F/2010/0488) must be in by Thursday, April 15. Visit www.wokingham.gov.uk/planning
