GENEROUS shoppers have wowed supermarket staff by handing over hordes of gifts for children who would otherwise be going without at Christmas.

The annual Toys and Teens appeal sees residents asked to donate presents for vulnerable youngsters to make sure everyone has something to unwrap on the big day.

Staff at the Sainsbury’s store in Friar Street have said they are amazed at the haul that has been dropped off so far and look forward to seeing more gifts coming in.

Charlotte Bernard, PR ambassador at the shop, said: “We have been a part of the Toys and Teens appeal for the last four years, but this is the first time we have been a collection point.

“I can’t believe how generous our customers and colleagues have been.

“Last week my colleague Kerri put a message on her Facebook page telling friends that we were collecting for Toys and Teens and it just snowballed – the response from her family and friends was just awesome.”

The picture, left, shows just a small amount of what has been handed in so far and staff will be proudly adding their contribution to the town’s overall collection next month.

Charlotte added: “We are just so happy we are able to help with this fantastic Christmas appeal and want to say a big thank-you to everyone who has donated a toy or gift.”

* There are several drop-off points across the town, including Sainsbury's Friar Steet, Caversham Library, Lower Earley Library, Woodley Library and The Fox and Hounds in Tilehurst.
