AN INITIATIVE that aims to fill the stockings of less fortunate children in Reading has launched in association with the Reading Chronicle.

Charity Reading Family Aid's Toys and Teens takes donated items and re-gifts them to families across the town.

Last year more than 1,500 children benefited from the project, which relies on the good will and generosity of residents, charity shops, businesses and social workers with access and knowledge to those in need across the town.

Ruth Perkins, vice chairman of Reading Family Aid, said: “These are children who would otherwise be unlikely to receive any Christmas gifts.

“This is largely caused by poverty but also through illness and disability, drug and alcohol abuse, refugee status and so on.

“It is never the children's fault that they are in this situation. How do you tell your five year old that once again Father Christmas has forgotten to stop by?

“Its heartbreaking just to think about it – that’s what keeps us involved and why we are asking the people of Reading to get involved.”

If sufficient donations are made, each child will receive a selection of gifts including puzzles, craft items, colouring books, cuddly toys, DVDs and sport equipment.

Although each donation is highly valued, larger items and ones with plugs are not requested.

The Reading Chronicle will feature updates and stories from the Toys and Teens appeal each week from now until early December.
