Starting at noon on Saturday, despite heavy rain and swollen legs, the teams managed to play until dawn.

The event was organised by Peter Hutchinson, a food and drinks manager at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, with his friend and colleague George Hale for the brain injury charity Headway.

Mr Hale, 21, said his family had raised more than £100,000 for Headway after his brother Simon suffered a serious brain injury five years ago.

He said: “My brother went out one night and fell off a 20ft wall onto his head.

“He was in a coma for five-and-a-half weeks and in hospital for a long time.

“I don’t know how our family would have got through without Headway.

“They have been there for us and are on the end of a telephone for Simon if he needs them.” Mr Hutchinson said of the match that people kept going as long as they could, and some were still suffering.

He said: “It was great that so many people came down to support us as well as play.”
