A DEVELOPER behind controversial plans to build a sprawling shopping complex in Burghfield has performed a spectacular climbdown in its high court battle against the council.

Henry Davidson Developments, which wants to build up to 350 homes off Hollybush Lane, pulled out of a legal challenge to West Berkshire Council's Core Strategy, which outlines how planning applications should be treated, at the eleventh hour. The developer has already had the plans knocked back once, when its initial application was ruled invalid following a boundary mix-up when it sought to build on land it does not own.

The initial proposal, which included a supermarket, retail units, pub, nursery, five two-bedroom flats and a 60-bed care home, received 1,500 objections from Burghfield's population of 6,000.

West Berkshire planning boss, Cllr Hilary Cole, said: "This is good news for the residents of West Berkshire as the council no longer has to mount a costly defence to a strategy that was approved not only by local people but endorsed by the Planning Inspectorate."
