Confused neighbours were surprised to see what appeared to be these three bike racks installed in a west Reading road.

People took to social media to express their surprise workers had installed these metal bars in the road within metres of the corner of Baker Street and Anstey Road.

‏@g50percent tweeted: “Which bright spark put a bike rack on the junction of Ansty / Baker Street? @ReadingCouncil ? #rdg #rdguk”

James Moore, tweeting from ‏@tomfooled, added: “@g50percent That’s just weird!”

While ‏@Eastreadingcom said: “@g50percent @ReadingCouncil @readingcycle Reading council starting to rolling out new on street cycle racks?”

But borough council spokesman Oscar Mortali told The Chronicle the bike racks had mistakenly been picked up at the depot instead of holding bars for new communal bins and said they were installed in error near the junction.

He added: “These metal bars were installed in error and will be removed as a matter of urgency today.

“The intention is to introduce communal bins on the road with holding bars to keep them in place, but to place them further away from the junction.

“The holding bars for the bins are kept in the same depot and the wrong piece of equipment was picked up by highways staff in error.”
