TWO people were taken to hospital after a fire tore through a flat in west Reading this afternoon.

Firefighters received multiple calls from neighbours and passers-by who saw the flames and smoke rising from a blaze which broke out in a ground-floor flat in Trafalgar Court off Josephine Court at about 12.50pm.

Crews from Caversham, Wokingham Road and Dee Road rushed to the three-storey block of flats and seven people were evacuated from the building before they could use breathing apparatus and hose reels to douse the flames.

The flat was completely destroyed while the two homes above were damaged by heat and smoke and two people were taken to the hospital for treatment for burns and smoke inhalation. It is not known what condition they are in.

A candle or tealight in a bedroom is believed to be the cause of the blaze and firefighters are reminding neighbours to make sure they do not leave flames unattended or near to anything flammable.
