TWO fiancees have launched a petition to try to bolster sentencing powers to stop other families going through the nightmare they have endured.

Tracey Fidler and Hayley Lindsay lost their partners, Kris Jarvis, 39, and 30-year-old John Morland, during a devastating smash when a drink driver ploughed into the two cyclists in Purley Rise, Purley, in February.

Driver Alexander Walter was jailed for 10 years and three months after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, driving while uninsured and disqualified and aggravated vehicle taking at Reading Crown Court in April.

But the grieving fiancees slammed the justice system for the short sentence and have now launched an e-petition to try to strengthen the arm of judges jailing dangerous drivers.

Mum-of-two Hayley, 27 from Tilehurst, said: “We are not just doing it for ourselves, we are doing it for Kris and John.

“It is two lives and two families. One death is bad enough, but it is two men and two families, that is how it should be looked at in the eyes of the law.”

The petition, which went live on Friday and has already gathered more than 900 signatures, calls for the Government to change the law so that in the case of multiple deaths judges can impose a jail term per victim, not just the 14-year maximum. If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures it will trigger a Parliamentary debate over the issue.
