The Reading International Brigade Memorial, which previously stood opposite Reading Borough Council’s former civic offices, has been moved to Forbury Gardens.

In a ceremony led by Reading Mayor Tony Jones, neighbours paid their respects once more, almost 25 years to the day since the statue was first unveiled.

At least 16 people with ties to Reading are known to have gone to Spain to join the Republicans fight against the Nationalists during the war in 1936-39.

Cllr Jones said: “I am very pleased to see this memorial – and an important part of Reading’s heritage – renovated and

re-located to the Abbey Quarter.

“The re-dedication service will honour and remember those Reading residents who fought for freedom and democracy in the Spanish Civil War.”

Ray Parkes, an author who chronicled the town’s involvement, said: “After 25 years it’s wonderful to see this nationally regarded monument returned to its original condition, and re-located to such an historic setting.

“We’d like to express our profound thanks to the mayor, Reading Borough Council, and all the many individuals and organisations who so generously gave money and time to make this possible.”

It is thought three of the Reading residents who went to Spain were killed as they worked to raise funds for refugees and collect food for those whose lives were disrupted by the war.
