The returning MP has been appointed the parliamentary secretary position in the Cabinet Office as part of the party’s shake-up following last week’s General Election win.

Mr Wilson was first appointed to the role last September when the previous incumbent Brooks Newmark resigned in the midst of a sex scandal.

Upon officially learning the news today Mr Wilson said he was delighted to be returning to the position.

He said: “It is a job I really, really enjoyed at the end of the last Parliament and I am delighted to have been re-appointed.

“I am looking forward to making a real difference and utilising charities with the public service in a way that we have not seen before.

“I will continue to bring my experience from my business life to the Cabinet Office and to the role of Minister for Civil Society but we are very keen to make sure that there is an expansion in the work that charities can do across government.”

Mr Wilson was re-elected into the Reading East seat for a third term on Friday on a slightly decreased majority, this time over Labour opponent Matt Rodda.

He believed that his push for using the voluntary sector in public services would benefit residents.

He said: “The important thing is that we deliver the best possible service that we can and sometimes central government is not necessarily the best provider of a service - possibly because it is not as efficient or maybe other reasons.

“We do know that some of the best providers of services are social enterprises and charities and I am very keen to see them taking a bigger role in making both government contracts and finding new ways of funding their activities.”
