THE annual Christmas event in Forbury Gardens will not take place this year as restoration works continue at the Abbey Ruins.
Reading Winter on Ice has been held in the popular Victorian gardens for the last three years, but the scaffolding surrounding the Abbey Gateway during renovation works means access for vehicles is restricted.
The firm responsible for organising the event looked into the possibility of adapting the event on-site, but decided it would not be able to go ahead with a Christmas event in Reading this year.
Councillor Sarah Hacker, lead member for Culture, Sport and Consumer Services, said: “There will be a wide range of exciting attractions to draw people to Reading this festive season, as well as our excellent range of shops, bars, restaurants and arts venues.
“It is disappointing the Forbury Gardens will not be hosting a Christmas event this year but we will now start planning the return of a fabulous festive activity next year.”
Reading Borough Council is working to ensure the festive celebration returns next year.
