A QUICK-THINKING bystander tackled a man fleeing the scene of an attempted rape in Prospect Park.

Between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Tuesday, August 30 two women were attacked in the Tilehurst park.

A 31-year-old woman was approached by a man who tried to strike up conversation before grabbing her. She pushed him off and ran away.

Later the same day a 20-year-old woman was grabbed from behind in the same park.

She struggled with the man and they fell to the floor where he tried to rape her.

The victim called for help and the man fled the scene before being caught by a member of the public.

Police, who think the two attacks are linked, remained on the scene through out today to reassure the public.

Investigating officer detective inspector Dave Turton of Reading Force CID, said: "Detectives are investigating these serious incidents and will be carrying out a thorough investigation.

"I would like to speak to anyone who saw either of these incidents taking place, or who saw a man acting suspiciously in the area at the time to get in touch by calling the Thames Valley Police non-emergency number on 101.

"Officers are in the area conducting enquiries. Anyone with any information or concerns can approach and speak to a police officer.”

A 26-year-old from Reading was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and sexual assault. He remains in police custody.
