THE MAN with the best Salvador Dali moustache in the world is shaving it off for charity.
Caversham based Johnny King has been cultivating his extravagant facial hair for the past six years, teasing the bristles into an curly flourish with a daily wax-and-twirl routine.
In September 2015 his efforts paid off when he won the Best Dali Moustache category at the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Austria.
Now the car salesman is planning to shave off his plaudit winning tash to raise money for a cause close to his heart.
“In 2014 I had a mountain bike accident and injured my liver pretty badly,” Mr King explained.
“I was taken to a liver ward in Wales where there were lots of people who were dying. It really upset me. They can be very painful conditions.
“I started thinking, ‘if this is how adults deal with this, what would a child do in that situation?’”
Spurred on by the Handle Bar Club, whose charity of the year is the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, the 34 year-old decided he would sacrifice his beloved lip-warmer in a bid to raise £1,000 for the research and care organisation.
“I am a little sad to see it go,” he continued.
“My moustache is a big part of my life but these children need money more than I need a moustache. It will grow back I am sure.”
