HEAVY rain has led to complaints the new pedestrian and cycle bridge is susceptible to flooding during times of bad weather.

Following the recent wet spell commuters and residents who use the river crossing have been faced with water logged paths surrounding the bridge's northern access point.

Gill Selby, who uses the bridge to get to work, said on Monday: "Two of the three access paths are currently under water after last night's rain.

"The surrounding grass is sodden. I feel that some urgent remedial work is needed to raise the level of the paths above that of the surrounding grass so that the bridge can be used without the need for Wellington boots."

The £5.9m structure was formally opened last year with a ceremonial gave of Pooh sticks by Mayor of Reading Cllr Sarah Hacker.

A spokesman for Reading Borough Council said: "The past few weeks have seen high levels of rainfall in the area and the water table was already high before the extreme rain which fell overnight on Sunday.

Reading Chronicle:

"This has had an obvious effect on surface water levels at Christchurch Meadows, which is not uncommon on the meadows at this time of year.

"While some approaches leading to the bridge are currently waterlogged, it remains fully accessible with a short temporary detour.

"The local weather forecast is for a period drier weather this week and we expect surface water to return to normal over the next few days."
