A NEW High Sheriff for Berkshire has been sword in at a ceremony outside the crown court.

Graham Barker said he was ‘deeply honoured’ after being selected for the role.

The office of High Sheriff is the oldest secular office in country apart from the monarchy.

Mr Barker said: "I shall look to serve the sovereign and people from all walks of life in Berkshire to the best of my ability.

"I look forward to supporting the judiciary, the police, the magistracy, the prison and probation services, the emergency services, the Armed Forces, the six unitary authorities of Berkshire and recognised Church and Faith groups.

"This appointment is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and support the charity and voluntary work that is undertaken by so many people in the County of Berkshire.

"I plan to focus on rehabilitation of offenders and early interventions to prevent youth crime. I will also support the Thames Hospice and the Berkshire Community Foundation.”

The role is now largely ceremonial, but carries the status of being the Queen’s highest judicial officer in the county.

Mr Barker was appointed to the role by Her Majesty the Queen in March 2018 during a meeting of the Privy Council held at Buckingham Palace.
