A CHARITY football match will be held in memory of a brave Royals fan who lost his battle with cancer at the age of 14.

Reading FC fan Matthew Pike, who died from leukaemia in October 2015, will be remembered with a special game between Calcot Royals and Highmoor Ibis on December 2.

Former striker Noel Hunt described Matthew as 'one of the bravest and funniest' people he knew following a visit to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2011.

The Over-35's charity match will be held at Rivermoor Stadium ground and all of the proceeds will be donated to the Alexander Devine Children's Hospice.

Debbie Pike, his mother, said: "He showed a lot of courage while he was ill and he always made other people smile.

"It is such a fantastic charity. They care for terminally ill children and they also offer great support for families.

"He was a massive Reading fan and he was a goalkeeper at the academy. Noel Hunt was his favourite player and he came to Matthew's funeral."

The life long supporter touched many lives by making an inspirational video to help other young people receiving treatment.

Richard Wilkinson from Calcot Royals said: "It has been nearly two years since Matthew died and his father asked me if we would be interested in organising another charity match.

"We raised more than £8,000 with the first one and we were able to split the money between Royal Berkshire Hospital and John Radcliffe Hospital.

"Matthew started playing for Calcot Royals' Under-15's in 2015 with all of his friends. The club has come together to support Alexander Devine.

"We are very grateful to Highmoor for hosting the game and we hope to raise a lot of money for the charity."

Matthew, who attended Park Lane Primary School in Tilehurst, received a Pride of Reading Award for his video and met squad members from his beloved Reading FC during a Christmas visit to the Children's Ward in 2011.

Every player involved will donate a minimum of £100 as an entry fee.
