A HIT and run driver who overtook traffic on a busy road before ploughing into a teenage boy and driving off was being hunted by police today.

The 16-year-old was using the pedestrian crossing outside Tesco Extra in Oxford Road when he was struck by a black car.

The reckless motorist overtook a number of cars before jumping a red light and crashing into the victim.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene and the youngster was taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital with minor injuries.

Roads policing investigators probing the shocking crash now want to trace the driver of the black vehicle.

A police spokesman said: "Between 6pm and 6.15pm on Monday June 19 a 16-year-old boy was using the pedestrian crossing outside Tesco Extra in Oxford Road, when he was hit by a black vehicle travelling towards the town centre.

"It is believed that the driver of the black car overtook a number of cars before driving through a red traffic light and hitting the victim. The driver did not stop at the scene."

Anyone with information about the crash should contact Thames Valley Police on 101.

Police constable Matt Woollams-Seeney, investigating, added: "We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision in which a car collided with a 16-year-old boy. I would urge anyone who has any information about what happened who has not already spoken to police to come forward.
