LITTER pickers were in full swing on Saturday for the annual community clean in Newbury.

Volunteers teamed up with the town's councillors for a series of events on March 25, at locations such as Falkland Memorial, Northcroft Park and Digby Road Park.

Children and parents enjoyed the opportunity to improve the environment, removing a number of unwanted items from the town's favourite landmarks.

Councillor Margo Payne said: “What an amazing turn-out and an incredible result filling 40 rubbish bags with discarded waste and clearing some of our open spaces to enable residents and visitors to enjoy the lovely environment available to its full advantage.

“Thank you to everyone who joined in and to Mcdonald's Northbrook Street and the Retail Park for their sponsorship.

“It is hoped the litter-pick will show others that we care about the future of our local environment and that we are not prepared to live, work and play in an area that is blighted by rubbish.

“It creates a sense of community and for some of our younger volunteers it is their first taste of active citizenship.”
