A NATURE cafe for people with dementia has been saved from closure thanks to two generations donations.

The Nature Memories Cafe in Thatcham offers free weekly sessions providing a relaxing environment made up of crafts, homemade cake and a stunning lakeside view.

Just two months after it opened funds for the project ran dry and organisers declared Monday's session the last.

However, thanks to significant donations made just hours after the announcement, the cafe can continue for at least another two months.

Becky O'Melia, centre ranger for cafe owners Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust, said: "We have just had a couple of participants step forward until such a time as we find more funding.

"To keep the cafe open we need about £200 per session so we can make it free for everybody."

Every Monday since January people have come along with a family member or carer to spend time with each other in the open air.

"Just being out in nature is fantastic for everybody," Ms O'Melia continued.

"For people with dementia the feeling they get stays with them. They might feel and eat better for the rest of the day, for example."

West Berkshire Council worked with Trust workers prior to the cafe's opening, training them to work with people with dementia.
