A FORMER darts world champion will be part of a team attempting to break a world record to raise money for a Woodley-based charity.

Dennis Priestley, 66, is joining members at the Winnersh British Legion club on September 18 as they attempt to throw the most bullseyes in a day.

Two-time world champion Priestley, who is nicknamed 'The Menace', is hoping he and the eight club members can surpass the record of 1,505 set in 2011.

“We know of several attempts to beat our record that have failed,” said Matty Wilson, who was part of the team five years ago and is once again involved.

“But now we are looking to raise the bar further still. In 2011 we were assisted by another world champion – Bob 'The Limestone Cowboy' Anderson.

“And although he only threw for 20 minutes, he really spurred us on. I'm sure Dennis will have the same effect.

“Our record is one of the longest-standing darts endurance records. It's not only a test of stamina, but of speed and accuracy as well.”

All of the money raised from the event will go to The Lend & Play Toy Library, which provides toys and learning equipment to children up to the age of seven across the Reading and Wokingham areas.

The players' attempts will have to be filmed at all times and observed by at least two independent witnesses to satisfy Guinness World Records.

In addition, the chairman of the British Darts Organisation, Bill Foot, will also be officiating the event which begins at 10am.

Entry to the event is free if you would like to attend.
