A MAN is in hospital after a 20-hour stand-off with police in Earley.

Police were called to reports of a man on the roof of a house in Church Road, Earley late on Tuesday evening.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene, and remained there.

The incident came to a climax at 6.30pm yesterday evening (Wednesday) when the man was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital after sustaining injuries. He is said to be in a critical, but stable condition.

Thames Valley Police has said it will refer itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission in connection with a fear for welfare incident.

The Force is making the referral as a mandatory requirement.
