A MAN has been arrested for drink driving after a bus and car crashed closing Reading Bridge.

The incident, which involved a pink number 23 bus and a black Range Rover, happened at 2.46pm.

A group of kids on bikes helped the driver of the Range Rover out of the car.

Goncalo Conceicao, who works in the Thames Water building, said: "I saw the crash and saw the petrol flowing everywhere.

"The driver was in the car and kids with bikes were trying to get him out.

"The first thing I thought to do was to cut the power in the bus.

"I found the driver on the other side of the bus who said he had hurt his knee. I said 'we need to turn the power off, how do I do it?' And we went round and turned it off.

"My first thought was if this did go off like a bomb we should cut the power."

South Central Ambulance Service said most people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Gareth Ford-Lloyd, spokesman for Thames Valley Police, said: "One man has been arrsted on suspicion of drink driving.

"Two people have recieved minor injuries and have been taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital.

"It is expected the road will reopen at 5pm."

Ellie Gray of the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We sent two crews from Caversham Road and Wokingham Road and a heavy rescue unit which we keep at Dee Road Station in Reading."

John Waterhouse was sitting on the back of the bus when the collision happened.

He said: "I had just taken my glasses off to clean them. I didn't see anything coming.

"I am a bit bruised. I think the driver scraped his knee up.

"A kid fell off the front seat and I just got up to help him."

Traffic was diverted over Caversham Bridge while emergency services attended the scene.

Paul Swinney, passing by, said: "It was quite horrific. There were lots of police and fire engines and ambulances and rapid response cars.

"The bus has been evacuated. It looked bad."
